We are proud to have another quilt published!. Our Feathered Star is featured in the latest Quilt Trends magazine. Cathy took a very traditional pattern and used contemporary batiks by Island Batiks. This shot does not show the star that well. We will be loading more pictures.

Babies bring out the best in everyone! Sarah has just completed this adorable Bopple Ball for her niece. You have to love the bright colors on it.

We are 10 days into January and our classes begin this weekend! The wonderfully talented Debby Brown is offering two classes this Saturday: Call to reserve your spot.

1/14 from 10-12 The Latest in Longarm Quilting ($25). During this 2-hour information-filled seminar you will learn a new technique and take home pattern to practice your new skill. You'll learn how to simply re-size designs, preview the patterns on your quilt top and transfer the designs to the fabric with ease.

1/14 from 1-5 Borders Rule ($75). If you love the strong look of lines in your borders, this template-based class is for you. this class is full of low-math and no-math ways to turn your corners.

Not to be left out - Cathy's first class is also 1/14 from 10-11- $5 Block of the Month. Cathy is very excited about this class, each block is only $5, you can choose traditional or batik. Stop Monkeying Around

We really start getting silly this time of year. Probably from the lack of sleep and the overindulgence of sugar! Anyway as a result of all our giddiness we came up with a really fun new quilt - Monkey in the Middle.

We have been getting rave reviews - it even got published in the Winter edition of Quilt Trends (we also made the cover with another design - brag, brag)

Before we all drop into sugar comas, we wanted to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

Our store will be closed from 3pm on 12/23 through 12/26 and again from 12/31 through 1/2. We'll be thinking up some great new products to start off the New Year!

For fun we decided to see what our Numerology for our birth dates were. See we're not just your average Quilt Store, we are very deep and intellectual ;). It was a lot of fun and this site gives a huge amount of info, including how old you are down to the second.

We discovered that 2012 is a '5' year. Which means change and surprise! Never one to miss an opportunity, Cathy has created a $5 Block of the Month that begins in January. It will run for 9 months. Obviously the $5 cost is a nod toward the '5' year; the change and surprise is if you bring your completed block the following month then that month is FREE (you get to keep your change - SURPRISE!)

There is lots of debate over when the actual 12 days of Christmas begins - is it today and ends on 12/24? Is it tomorrow and ends on 12/25? Or does it begin on 12/26 like the Scots believe? Well whenever it is - it is a time to celebrate.

39 days from today is Christmas. Incredibly another year is coming to an end... BUT NOT YET! There is still time to finish your projects. We can help! Need finishing fabric? We go it. Need some ideas? We got tons. Looking for the perfect gift? Who doesn't love an assortment of threads?

Cathy and Allan became grandparents this past week! A beautiful 8 lb 4 oz healthy girl was born to Aric and Jennifer, instantly turning Cathy and Allan to mush. The smiles around here are HUGE. Cathy is SO giddy that she is offering ANYTHING PINK in store 18.4% OFF!! In store only, has to have pink in it and for fabrics has to be a yard or more, good through the end of November. Just mention its a girl.

We'll get back on track next week - this week it is all about baby toes, baby clothes and of course baby quilts. Oh and Allan crowing about the fact that her going home outfit was the ducky one he bought!

End Game

As all quilters know - end game for a quilt is the binding. The time consuming finishing touch. Cathy has a new tool, CutRite Bind Up, that she LOVES. You get a perfect mitred seam every time. You don't need to measure, it works on binding of any width, and the bright green color makes the lines clear and easily seen on all fabrics.

This tool helps you save time and gives you beautiful mitred seams.

Nice alliteration right? We got in some gorgeous fabric from Camelot Cottons. All the ladies here went nuts over the colors and style.

Cathy, Denise and Sue quickly came up with lots of project ideas and then Cathy had a show in NY. Maybe it was the air, maybe it was the hotdogs, either way Cathy came up with the great idea of using the fabric as art. She took her two favorite designs and some picture frames - and VIOLA! The beautiful canvases below were created.

This is a really fun way to display some of your favorite fabrics, plus they are really easy to make.

Cathy's son and daughter-in-law had their baby shower this weekend. Cathy made two quilts, one for the baby's room and one for Aric's car. Aric was a big Sesame Street fan when he was growing up and Cathy decided to continue the tradition.

Sarah and Craig had a glorious day! The reception at The Feast at Roundhill was exceptional, we highly, highly recommend them. The whole weekend went off without a glitch, which if you know our family, is very unusual.

This Friday, Cathy and Allan's daughter, Sarah is getting married. The days leading up to the event promise to be exciting! Family is coming in, meals are being planned and last minute details are being taken care of.

You may remember that Cathy made a special quilt for her son Aric and his wife Jennifer for their wedding.

For Sarah she has created another amazing quilt, aptly named Sarah's Wedding Quilt. It is a gorgeous quilt that Cathy presented to Sarah at her shower.

Cathy also made quilts for the bridal party and in laws, as well as special centerpieces. She is going to photograph it all and we'll post it here next week. The weather is supposed to be 74 degrees and sunny - a wonderful start to their lives. We wish Sarah and Craig a lifetime of happiness!

Road Trip!

Finally the sun has come out, just in time for our road trips.

Webster Dictionary online gives lots of information on Road Trip. It defines it as; 1: a trip taken by a sports team to play one or more away games 2: an extended trip in a motor vehicle

First Known Use of ROAD TRIP - 1953, Next Word in the Dictionary: road warrior, Previous Word in the Dictionary: road test

It all makes perfect sense to us; getting Allan to pack up the car with everything Cathy wants to fit in is great sport for the employees; 20 years after road trip was first used, Cathy and Allan got married starting a trip of a lifetime; and Allan considers himself quite the road warrior while Cathy considers every trip a test of her patience.

Up first is Northern Star Quilters Guild show World of Quilts XXXII. This weekend 4/30-5/1 in Somers, NY. One of our shorter trips. Cathy has submitted a quilt at this show. It is a quilt she started years ago and had promised Sarah she would give it to her for her wedding. Well Sarah is getting married this June, so Cathy made it just under the wire.

Next up is Quilt Market in Salt Lake Utah May13-15. We are actually flying to this one, but we might have to drive back with all the shopping Sue and Cathy plan on doing!

We got football QUILTER'S style! We have joined up with The Quilting Football League and you don't have to know anything about football!

We have created a Quilt Basket team, our colors are purple and gold/yellow. We chose those colors because they are the colors of Fiona's family's county in Ireland - Wexford. Purple for royalty since the King of Leinster used to live in Wexford and the gold or yellow was due to a group of Wexford players playing a team in England and they wore yellow cloth around their waists to differentiate them from the other team, it is also how they got the name "Yellowbellies".

The fact that Fiona is the only one who knows how to sign into the league is completely coincidental.

Frankly Scallop, I Don't Give a Clam

Silly we know, but fun for a rainy day. Sue is showing us today how she did the scallops on her Always Believe Quilt.
We use the Quilt in a Day Scallops Ruler, which is currently on back order until May.

Start off by drawing a diagonal line from the corner of the quilt to the corner of the border fabric.

Based on the measurement of your quilt you will figure out the size of your scallops.
The ruler comes with instructions on how to do this along with a size chart.

Line the ruler up against the diagonal based on your scallop size and mark the scallop.

Continue on the other side.

And all around the quilt.

**Big tip from our favorite quilter, Debby Brown,
DO NOT cut out your scallops until AFTER the quilt has been quilted.**

Always Believe

Sue has done it again! She came up with this darling design from the Always Believe line of Red Rooster fabric. It is so sweet that Fabric Trends has picked it up for their Spring 2011 magazine.

You can find the pattern in the magazine, we are waiting on the fabric to arrive.In the mean time, Sue is offering some insider tips on how to put the mail block together.

First up, here are all the cut pieces you need to make the block.

Next you take a pink triangle and a green triangle and stitch them together, then add a blue flower triangle.

You then take a pink strip and sew it to the green side (you'll make 4 of these), then partially stitch the pink square to the blue triangle end. Repeat steps to create 3 more blocks around the pink square.

Finish the block around the pink square.

Right now we are in Lancaster at the Lancaster Quilt Show. Lancaster is known for many things, but what we find most interesting are the town names; Virginville, Paradise, Bird-in-Hand, Intercourse to name a few. If you are coming to the show the names definitely make the drive more fun!

Shady Endings

To finish up your shade:
Trim the shade sides to your roller dimensions.

Place decorative border on bottom of shade.

Fold over the top and top stitch to shade.

Leave one end open to insert plastic rod.

Put double stitch tape across top of shade to adhere to roller.

Roll shade up and install in window.

Quilt Basket Detour Directions for Friday

From 7-4 on Friday the town is working on the bridge over the rail trail. They are not detouring traffic, but instead closing the road for 20 minutes at a time.

To avoid delays use the following directions:

Coming on Myers Corners Road, make a right onto Montfort, make a left onto Lake Walton Road. At the light make a left onto Rt 376. We’re on the left past Guardian Self Storage.

The road work is only on Friday. There should be no traffic issues Saturday or Sunday.

Creating Shades

Sue is sharing her insights and tips for creating window shades. This sample uses Ty Penningtons fabric line from Westminster Fabrics.

First measure the INSIDE of your window frame.

Next buy a vinyl shade and brackets. Follow the manufacturers instructions for mounting the shade. Once mounted, remove the shade roller and remove the vinyl shade from the roller.

Bottom rail, brackets, shade roller, and Fuse-a-shade

Measure the tube portion of the shade roller. Cut your fabric 2 inches wider than the roller and the length of your window. Fuse your fabric to Fuse-A-Shade material the same width and length as your material.

Next week, Sue explains how to trim your shade, add the trim and bottom rail and attaching your shade to the roller.

Finishing Up Romance

Cathy's last tip for the Rose of Remembrance kit is working with the curves of the flowers.

Use the same same stitch and weight as when doing the leaves. We used Aurifil 40 weight thread that was specifically chosen to match the Island Batik fabrics. It comes with 12 different color threads and a portion of the profits goes to support Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative.

Next week Cathy is going to start a Home Dec project.

Back to Rose of Sharon Tips

As women and moms we are all about the multi-tasking. This comes in handy for the embroidery on this quilt.

I suggest working on more than one block at a time. It saves time changing thread and bobbins. I match the top thread and bobbin thread. You can do all of one color on 3 blocks before taking time to change threads.

You only need a scissors width between tracings.

One of my favorite notions has become the Rose of Sharon stencils. They are so easy to place on fusible web and trace. I tried tracing from the book and found it not as accurate.

There are many new light weight fusible webs available. We have been using Shades Softfuse and like it very much.

One last tip for the week. When stitching around the leaves,
stitches are angled EXCEPT at the tips, that is a straight line.

Ty Pennington is in the House!

Rose of Sharon Tip #2

Cathy has lost her mind over Janome's Applique foot. The circles in Rose of Sharon get pretty small and through trial and error, Cathy got the best results with the Janome foot.

Cathy uses Janome Horizon machine with length and wide set to 2. The foot fits on any Janome machine.

Rose of Sharon Tips By Cathy

Tip #1 - making a curved stem.

This quilt uses both straight and curved stems. When making a curved stem as Cathy is in this demonstration, cut the fabric on a 45 degree angle. When making a straight stem, cut the fabric on the straight.

ALWAYS work on the wrong side of the fabric.

Cut your fabric on a 45 degree angle.

Remove the triangle and working on the remaining fabric, put your ruler a 1/4 inch in. Score it with your Hera.

Now move the ruler in to a 1/2 inch and score again. Move the ruler to 3/4 inch and cut.

Your strip will have 2 score marks, fold the right side into the middle, iron and then fold the left side into the middle and iron.

You will have a 1/4 inch bias strip.

To keep the strip together, we used Roxanne Glue Baste It. Cathy put a few drops along the outer fold of the strip and using her fingers, pressed it closed.

You now have a perfect strip for a curved stem.

While Cathy has the designer skill and Allan is master of the machines; it is their niece that excels at writing.
For Christmas she wrote them a poem along the lines of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. She included all the quilt basket employees and extended family.

Austin was running around with his mop.

Denise was filling orders with care,
And just for the sake of the post office, Cathy was ridding herself of cat hair.

Dorrian was sprinting outside for the mail,
And Fiona was designing ads for a sale.

And Allan in his rounded shoes and large Santa cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap.

When from the classroom there arose a loud scream,
Sue Goth had designed a true quilter's dream!

But then came a dilemma into everyone's mind,
It needed to be quilted before they could bind!

And then who to their joyous surprise should appear,
But Debby Brown, causing all the employees to cheer.

She came with a large handi-Quilter, so precise and quick,
That Allan put together with a satisfying click.

She set to her work with a smile on her face,
And those around her smiled too - they knew perfect stitches she would place.

The back door opened and closed with a bang,

Theresa, Rita, Linda, and Sue Roe had arrived - now they had the whole gang!

Unbeknownst to the others, Elaine was busy preparing herself for a Janome selling spree,
While Cathy brewed a cup of peach tea.

Susanna stood by with paper and pen,
Nodding as she jotted down, "Aunt Cathy's Novel: Chapter Ten."

Meanwhile up front, Anne was doing some last minute shopping,
When there came a call from Sarah about the art of carrot chopping.

All the women there quickly jumped to her aid,
Anyone looking in would have wondered, "How much do these people get paid?"

Cathy watched all of this and kept it in control,
As Dorrian stuck pins in the Uncle Allan troll.

It is clearly obvious that this is everyone's favorite store,
From the organized bolts of fabric to the pins on the floor.

That is how we know it will be a great benefit

Head in the Clouds

We just got Cloud 9's new fabric line My Happy Nursery and we LOVE it.

It is more expensive than regular bolts of fabric, but it is better for the environment and the user. Rain, Rain Go Away

I bet lots of blogs are using that title today. We have been cooped up inside for days now. Luckily the ladies creative juices have been flowing and they made some fun projects.

Denise tends to bake when she is stuck inside and she made some great holiday aprons. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Party designs. You can get them on our site for only 13.50 a kit.

Sue is a gardener and goes outside regardless of the weather. She made this awesome raincoat using waterproof fabric. We are working on kitting the ponch and it will be online soon.

Here comes the Holidays

Every single year the holidays come up and surprise me. I KNOW they are coming, I look forward to them coming, I start ordering holiday fabrics in May and yet I'm surprised every time.

Sue created a fun eco-friendly shopping bag this summer, Market to Market. It got such a great response we asked her to keep going. She has created Christmas and birthday versions. They are so fun that the Quilter Magazine picked up the Christmas version for their Holiday Edition.

We also are going to have our Holiday Gift Workshops again. You can purchase a kit and if you want, use our classroom space and help to complete it. We have not scheduled the days and times yet, but you can see the kits online.

The Cast of Characters

The sign over our door might say Quilt Basket, but it is our employees, customers, friends and family that make this a business. This is a short bio on each one of us:

First there is Cathy, owner and chief bottle washer. She got into quilting over 30 years ago and has never looked back. She is talented, tireless, and helping plan her daughters wedding. We just try and stay out of her way.

Then there is Allan, Cathy's husband and Handi Quilter guru. He is man who is not afraid to stitch.

Sue is very talented and Cathy's right hand woman. She is mostly focused on Home Decor, and quilts. You can see her grandkids influence in patterns she creates. She also is constantly rearranging the store, which is great for the customers, but has the rest of the staff tripping until we get used to it.

Sue's quilts have been published in Fabric Trends and The Quilter.

Denise is Cathy's other right hand woman, equally talented and has a fashion to die for. She favors Asian fabrics, darker colors and more complex patterns. She is a marathon runner and has just sent her oldest off to college.

Elaine is our sewing machine maven. She embroideries like nobody's business.

Linda has a taste for the detailed, putting her talent to use on Lone Stars, clothing and quilts with such meticulous instructions we are in awe.

Anne does the books. She knows her numbers and she knows if she makes a mistake Cathy will tell their dad!

Debby is an incredibly gifted teacher, quilter, writer and friend. We have published two of her books and look forward to the next one. Debby runs our very popular retreats and is always coming up with new ideas and projects.

Book Signing

The multi-talented Debby Brown held a book signing last week for her second book, Borders and Beyond. We had Mexican themed foods and a great turn out. Her first book, Beyond the Lines, was such a hit we knew a second book couldn't be far behind.

Getting Ready for Cooler Weather

The Autumnal Equinox is this week and we are having lots of fun getting ready for the cooler nights. Moda's Let It Snow line offers a great pattern for a quilt that will keep you toasty all winter long.

A simple 9 patch turned into a great winter quilt. I even put wool batting in to make the quilt extra toasty warm!
